LDS.org is Google’s #1 “Church”
October 10th, 2006 by DustinI read that LDS.org was number 1 on google for the term “church” and mormon.org was number seven. When I tried the two sites were number one and number two. Then I tried again and they were number 1 and 3. At first I was excited, then I realized I was just getting “personalized” results

Actually, I just did a search, and I don’t have the personalized searches. Lds.org was 1 and mormon.org was number 7.
One way that Google finds results is through the numeber of sites that link to a site. So, if lots of people have a link to lds.org, then lds.org will show up higher on the list.
So, it is a good thing to see it so high.

Yes, you’re right. Once I turned off the personalization it was down to number 7.

If you look in Google, over 11,000 pages link to http://www.lds.org. Source: http://www.google.com/search?q=link%3Awww.lds.org . I suspect the word “church” is used often in the linked text. This really shows you how important it is to link more to good sites . Of course http://www.lds.org is already widely linked to, which means that we should focus on linking to other LDS sites that may not already show up first.

Jacob,
I think you are correct. It seems that most sites who link to lds.org will containt he full name of the church, which will give it a lot of relative links for the term. Just as most people who use the term Mormon will link it to mormon.org, lds.org, or the wikipedia, which happens to be the 1, 2, & 3 top listings for the term.
